CNN —Health workers in northern Gaza exhumed the first corpses from mass graves in and around Al-Shifa Hospital on Tuesday, after they said Israeli forces killed hundreds of Palestinians and left their bodies to decompose during their two-week siege of the complex. Many of the decomposed remnants they discovered had been buried or were found above ground, officials told CNN on Monday. Palestinians walk through the destroyed Al-Shifa Hospital, in northern Gaza, on April 1. Gazan health workers told CNN they exhumed the first bodies from mass graves dug by Israeli forces. Tell me where my husband is?”Palestinians at Al-Shifa told CNN say they want to give their loved ones a proper funeral, lamenting the indignity of their deaths.

WCK and Anera, another aid group, have said they will pause operations in Gaza following the incident. Israel maintains there is no limit on the amount of food or humanitarian aid that can enter Gaza, but aid agencies accuse it of deliberately restricting deliveries. Shortly afterwards, American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera), an NGO that delivers aid to the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Jordan, also suspended its Gaza operations. Along with Turkey, the UAE is the biggest donor of aid to Gaza, according to COGAT, providing 25% of all aid from foreign nations. The fate of the extra aid WCK had planned for Gaza is also uncertain.

With Al Ahli hospital shaking from Israeli tank fire and no more anaesthetics left to operate, British-Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu Sitta told his team it was time to leave the last fully functioning hospital in Gaza City. All northern hospitals have effectively ceased functioning. Abu Sitta said a message had been received at Al Ahli hospital saying it had been surrounded by Israeli tanks. He said patients needing treatment remained at Al Ahli, and that another hospital in northern Gaza had been unable to take them. "Basically, the whole of northern Gaza now has no functioning hospital," he said.

Opinion | We Still Have Time to Stop the Worst

But are Israel’s actions — as the nation’s opponents argue — verging on ethnic cleansing or, most explosively, genocide? That means two important things: First, we need to define what it is that we are seeing, and second, we have the chance to stop the situation before it gets worse. That’s well over five times as many people as the more than 1,400 people in Israel murdered by Hamas. War crimes are defined in the 1949 Geneva Conventions and subsequent protocols as serious violations of the laws and customs of war in international armed conflict against both combatants and civilians. There is still time to stop Israel from letting its actions become a genocide.

NEW YORK (AP) — The physical pain of nearly dying when shrapnel from a roadside bomb in Iraq tore through his head 17 years ago was hard enough for ABC newsman Bob Woodruff. A couple of inches either way, Woodruff was told, and he would have been killed instantly. He has constant contact with veterans through the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which raises money for military families. That allowed for some gallows humor when Woodruff and Magnus Macedo, the sound technician on Woodruff’s 2006 trip, tried to cross it. Woodruff reunited with Saad Al-Dulaimi and Ghassan Al-Mohammadawi, Iraqi military men who had accompanied him in 2006.

On Tuesday, after the first strike in Jabaliya, the hospital received about 40 people who did not survive, and 250 others who were wounded, he said. I’ve watched U.S. warplanes attack Afghanistan; barely escaped a direct strike from a Russian MiG in Georgia, and lived for weeks under relentless Israeli bombardment in Lebanon. Israel has so far killed more than 8,000 people, the Gaza Health Ministry said, more than 40 percent of them children. But having spent time under bombardment, and having reported in Gaza, I have no time for these explanations. If we are to believe the Israeli political and military leadership’s own words — and I think we should — the assault on Gaza was driven, first, by straightforward vengeance. We could find out with a cease-fire, but they say we can’t ask for a cease-fire.

The Al Shifa hospital was lit up in Gaza City on Tuesday. But to the Israeli military, it is a threat, and, perhaps, a target. Among Al Shifa’s current patients are about 130 newborns who were orphaned just as they were born, according to doctors at Al Shifa. Born premature, they were placed in incubators in Al Shifa’s neonatal intensive care unit. Video A doctor treating premature babies at Al Shifa Hospital said that many of the newborns were now orphaned.

Iran-backed Hezbollah knows this and is keeping Lebanon's crises in mind as it plots the next steps in the conflict with Israel, sources say. "We tried to save whoever could be saved but the number was too great for the hospital team," he said. REGION IN CRISISAn injured person is assisted at Shifa Hospital after hundreds of Palestinians were killed in a blast at Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City, October 17. Israel's military on Wednesday published what it described as evidence that a misfired Palestinian rocket caused the hospital explosion. Before Tuesday's blast, health authorities in Gaza said at least 3,000 people had died in 11 days of Israeli bombardment. A Gaza civil defence chief gave a death toll of 300 at the hospital, while health ministry sources put it at 500.

Hundreds of people wounded in the Al-Ahli Hospital blast were rushed to Gaza's main hospital. Overwhelmed doctors performed surgeries on hospital floors, often without anesthesia, per AP. It's unclear who was behind the hospital blast, with Hamas blaming Israel and Israel pointing to a group in Gaza. Due to the severe shortage of medical supplies and available space, doctors had no option but to perform critical surgeries on hospital floors and in hallways, AP reported.

Hamas's idea for Saturday's attack on Israel dates to 2021, when the militant group began preparing intensively by studying the tactics and strategies of its opponent, according to Abu Obaida, the spokesman for Hamas's military wing, on its Telegram account. "Our forces achieved an unprecedented military victory in the history of conflict with the Zionist enemy," he said. Already, he said the result was "more than we had planned." The group's plan was to deploy 3,000 fighters for the battle, and another 1,500 for backup and support. It studied everything from how the Israeli military trains and deploys its soldiers, to the land and weather conditions.

A day that began with air raid sirens blaring out in the early morning had by lunchtime turned into one of the most terrifying attacks Israel has known in the 75 years of its existence. Though Israel is no stranger to terrorist attacks, Saturday’s assault was unprecedented – not least because of the lack of warning. Since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, it has spent billions of dollars securing the border from attacks. To stop rocket attacks, Israel has used the Iron Dome, an effective rocket defense system developed with help from the United States. The Israel Defense Forces have already begun airstrikes in Gaza targeting Hamas infrastructure, resulting in hundreds of dead and injured.
